About
the ELGA Trust
|
About the ELGA Trust The beginning In October 1982 three officials of the English Ladies' Golf Association recognised that times had changed. Golf was no longer the preserve of the comfortably off and was beginning to appeal to others who could perhaps benefit from a little financial encouragement to take up the game and hopefully stick to it. Travel, overnight accommodation at national competitions, as well as the cost of equipment and coaching all cost money. With a £100 donation from a generous anonymous lady golfer, our own golfing charity, the ELGA Trust was born. The present Each year the Trust awards grants totalling approximately £40,000 helping girl golfers and encouraging newcomers to the sport throughout England. It isn’t all spent on those young golfers who were already reaching the top of their particular tree. Much of the emphasis has moved towards coaching for beginners and simply making golf an attractive sport for girls to play. In 2002, for example, 31 Counties and 54 Golf Clubs were helped with the cost of group coaching schemes. The Trust also subsidised the coaching, travel, purchase of golf equipment and championship accommodation expenses of 243 promising individual girls. The future To ensure the future well-being of ladies' golf
we need to attract girls to the game and to give those who do take it
up encouragement and support. It is just as important to find the future
club members as it is to identify the next Laura Davies. |
