ELGA Trust patrons celebrate
2 August 2005 Supporters of English girls' golf are celebrating a £12,000 milestone. That's the sum raised in just seven months by the new patrons of the ELGA Trust, the charity for girls' golf. Patrons include 2004 British Women's Open champion Karen Stupples and television commentator Peter Alliss, while England's golfing superstar, Laura Davies, is an ambassador for the scheme. Patrons make a donation to the ELGA Trust, which encourages girls to play golf with grants for coaching and towards the cost of equipment and tournament expenses. Typically, it awards around £50,000 a year. A host of patrons got together at the English Girls' Championship at Liphook when their contribution was recognised by ELGA chairman Jenny Clink. “This has been a wonderful gathering of friends who have been able to watch some of the girls they have helped to get started in golf,” she said. “The support for the patrons scheme has been excellent and we are concentrating on growing it steadily.” Among the patrons at the championship were Ann Archer of Hanckley Common in Surrey, who captained the winning England team at European Ladies' Team Championship in 1967 and again at the Home Internationals of 1968; and Chris Stirling of Meon Valley, Hampshire, the 2004 English senior ladies' matchplay champion. Davies comments: “The ELGA Trust supported me in my early golfing days. I am therefore very pleased to be an ambassador for the Trust so that others may also benefit.” The Trust encourages girls to play golf, making grants for coaching and to help with the cost of equipment and tournament expenses. Last year, it awarded over £51,000. Supporters of girls’ golf are invited to become patrons by making a one-off donation of £100 or a standing order for an annual payment. The patrons scheme was backed at the meeting by Bridget Jackson and Vivien Saunders, who both began playing golf as girls and went on to enjoy illustrious careers. Saunders, who won the Ladies British Open during her professional days and returned to amateur ranks last year, said: “We can never do enough for juniors.” She went on: “If we encourage 1000 girl golfers to start the game each year possibly only two or three will play for England, possibly 50 will play for their county, but those juniors will become the backbone of our golfing communities.” If you would like more information about the
